The world seas contain numerous ecosystems that represent a habitat for numerous species of marine flora and fauna. The family of parrotfishes (Scaridae) lives in tropical and subtropical seas, and most often they can be found on coral reefs. In general, all species of this family are herbivores, but a small number of species feed on other available food sources such as detritus and corals. They feed using a set of teeth that are perfectly adapted to their way of feeding. In search of plant material, they use their strong teeth to tear off parts of the substrate, and use their pharyngeal jaws to chop them into small pieces. Thus, they play a key role as bioeroders of marine ecosystems. Bioerosion can cause certain negative consequences for the ecosystem, such as the loss of strength of the carbonate surface or the death of sessile organisms, but on the other hand, it contributes to the creation of fine sediments that build tropical reef islands. Parrotfishes greatly contribute to the balance of marine ecosystems, and as key organisms, they need to be protected in order to preserve the health of their populations.
